A.J. Karan
Bio
After spending more than three
decades in a full-time time profession in the Hotel Industry, A.J.Karan alias
Arun Jayakaran finally took the plunge of becoming a
writer.
His childhood was an extremely happy
one and till this day he has fond memories of his parents. His father a staunch
army officer, instilled a lot of discipline and those measures helped him
immensely in his professional career.
The sojourn in the army as a child
was an adventure of sorts. Meeting people from different cultures and
backgrounds and the amazing way in which they all lived together in harmony and
respect for each other always fascinated him. He always wondered why the same
could not be emulated in the country too.
During his school days he used to
narrate imaginary stories to his classmates laced with humour and typical
school boy type of fist fights. This inculcated the interest to write as he
grew older, and he did attempt to write a few short stories.
A.J. commenced his career with the
Taj Group and subsequently joined the Ambassador Group. After a stint with a
few other hotels he moved to Muscat where he spent almost 20 years before
returning to India for good.
Unfortunately the profession he took
up rarely presented him an opportunity to seriously test his writing skills and
it lay in a dormant stage for almost three decades. He made the transition from
a full-time professional to a Consultant, which gave him the time to test his
literary skills once again.
Today he is on the threshold of
launching his fourth book and hopes to write a few more in the coming years.
On a concluding note AJ has a piece
of advice for budding writers to follow their passion irrespective of
consequences and not delay the transition from desire to reality.
AJ also credits his wife as the
motivating factor in his efforts to becoming a full –time writer. Her support
and unflinching faith in his abilities proved to be the turning point in
fulfilling his ambition.
QUESTIONNAIRE :
1) When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer ?
I started writing short stories from
the age of 15, but due to various factors, I didn’t pursue writing till much
later.
2) When did you write your first book and how old were you ?
I was 50 years old when I wrote my
first book ‘Dark Intentions’.
3) What was the most surprising thing you learned in
creating your books ?
The most surprising and fascinating
part of writing in my opinion, is the creation of characters. Every character
becomes a person. Giving life to that person is no mean task, a lot of thought
and effort goes into the process. His or her role in the plot has to be
defined, making it interesting and intriguing for the reader.
4) How many book you have written ? Which is your favourite
?
So far I have written three books,
and my favourite is the second one called ‘Love without Boundaries’
5) Do you have any suggestions to help any budding writer
become a better writer ? If so, what are they ?
Write with a desire and passion to express
yourself, and not with a motive to become famous and rich.
6) Do you hear from your readers much ? What kind of things
do they say ?
A few readers who were total
strangers earlier are now my very good friends, and they connected with me only
after reading my books.
7) Tell us something about your newly released novel/book ?
My latest book ‘Sensual Attractions’
is based on realistic fiction, all the stories, incidents, characters are part
of our society which still discusses sex behind closed doors and in hushed
whispers. It was a challenge to write this book and I hope it is well received
for its content and style of writing.
And,
8) What do you think makes a good story ?
Plots and characters are the two
points to focus in writing a good story. Once you have conceived the plot,
creating the various characters to make the plot more interesting is the final
step in ensuring the story is riveting and you have the complete attention of the
reader.
