AUTHOR'S INTERVIEW: SWEET NEEM BY MOHINI DURGAMPUDI

Author Bio:
Mohini Durgampudi is an entrepreneur, food safety instructor and assists at a culinary incubator. She started her career in the IT sector but took a very happy and eager detour into the food industry. An avowed bookworm, her writings have so far been anonymous contributions to travel and food blogs and crowd sourced websites. Sweet Neem is her first book and it brings together her love of food, travel, family, history and culture.

Questionnaire:
1) When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer ?
Ans: No particular moment I can identify. I am a reader so it was almost a natural thing to try when I was thinking of something new to do.

2) How long does it take you to write a book ?

Ans: It took about four months to write the first draft of Sweet Neem and over a year of redoing parts, editing, polishing and tightening up till I was satisfied.

3) What is your work schedule when you are writing ?

Ans: Whenever the children are in school and all my housework is done.

4)What would you say is your interesting writing quirk ?

Ans: Hmm… I don’t know! I sure would like a reader to find it and let me know!

5) Where do you get your information or ideas for your books ?

Ans: From friends and family members experiences. From newspaper articles sometimes and from the various foods that cross my path each day.

6) What do you like to do when you're not writing ?

Ans: I like to cook and bake. I am constantly trying new dishes or creating my own recipes from scratch all the time.

7) Tell us something about your novel/book ?

Ans: Sweet Neem is for anyone who likes food and travel with a little history and culture added for background. It is the story of three generations coming together to save their family restaurant. Sweet Neem is about the new emerging urban India - strong, young, confident and cosmopolitan. There is a little bit of everything - just like life and just like a balanced meal; happiness/sweet, sadness/bitter, anger/chillies, fear/salt, disgust/sour and surprise/tangy.

8) What is one of the most surprising thing you learned in creating your books ?

Ans: That it is very hard to ‘finish’ writing. I was constantly editing - plot, characters, words, sentences, dialogues… even now months after publishing, every time I read Sweet Neem, I think I should change this, that or the other!
